Astrid Susanna Schulz Is Desexualizing the Female Form One Photo at a Time

Astrid Susanna Schulz, a self-taught photographer from Bremen, Germany, has been exploring the art of photography since 2013, transitioning to analog techniques in 2020. Her work focuses on portraits and nude studies, celebrating the diversity of human bodies and challenging the sexualization of the female form.

Schulz’s photography offers a raw, honest portrayal of natural bodies, dismantling cultural stereotypes around beauty. One of her key projects documents Kerstin, a woman overcoming an eating disorder and embarking on a health-driven weight-loss journey. Through annual analog photo shoots, Schulz captures this deeply personal process, focusing on vulnerability and transformation without sensationalism.

By normalizing the human body in all its forms, Schulz’s work redefines the way we see and celebrate ourselves.

A neutral visual language is important to me, objectification is far from my mind. It is important to me to desexualize the body, especially the female body.
