“Makeup is Not A Mask” is a film project that aims to show the beauty of the unconventional beauties. The films explore the role that makeup plays in the everyday life of femme identifying South Africans, especially those perceived to be living ‘alternative’ lifestyles. The characters share some insight into self-expression, self-love, beauty expectations and femme activism.
The films were directed by Jessica Young for Black Gosling (a South African based, all-female production company).
