“Normalize Body Hair” is a project by Kannetha Brown that challenges the stigmas surrounding women’s body hair. Growing up, Brown was taught that shaving was a rite of passage into womanhood and sexual maturity, while Jai Pereira (pictured) was inspired by a negative reaction of a partner to her unshaven body. Brown and Pereira aimed to celebrate body hair and start conversations about who dictates which appearances are acceptable and attractive for women. These standards, enforced both by men and women, normalize hatred towards the natural body.
This series is a call for women to reclaim ownership of their bodies and to define beauty and attraction on their own, without the influence of societal expectations.
