Sofia Zuluaga is a latina queer figurative painter from Bogotá, currently residing in Barcelona. Her work is focused on representing a woman’s perspective of sexuality, albeit not conforming to society’s standards of beauty and sometimes showcasing violent reactions to these.

Her paintings have been exhibited in the United States, United Kingdom, Italy, Mexico and Spain, and have been selected as finalists in internationally recognized competitions, such as Figurativas and ModPortrait.

Her themes of exploration revolve around a sense of inciting rebellion against our social conditioning; the narratives determining who and what each individual is entitled to be. In her last series, In Circum Morbi, she utilized sex as a vehicle of representation to expose the irony that is our contemporary identity, tempting the viewer to break free from their moral cannon. She has created a realm, her very own dark circus, in which she highlights how sordid humanity can be whilst guided by forces that we are seldom aware of. She utilizes vibrant colors amidst difficult themes, heightening the paradox of it all. In this fashion, Sofia creates tension in the spectator, with the sole purpose of pushing her audience to question and coming to terms with who they really are.
