Vesna Vrdoljak is a collage Artist living and working in Amsterdam. She is originally trained In European film and Aesthetics at Masters level, and did not see herself as an Artist until she began working in collage in 2012. Self-taught, her process began organically by combining appealing images sourced from vintage magazines and old photographs.
A strong narrative feel runs throughout her work, with each piece imbued with a story that can be open to interpretation, by combining images that at first may not relate to each other. Vesna fuses analogue images from magazines and journals with old photographs and bits of coloured paper, to create her narrative arrangements which are all glued together by hand.
“I make collages to create my own reality. I cut and glue by hand without digital intervention. The limited possibilities of the analogue working method appeal to me. The tactility of mainly old photos and paper is a major value in my work.
My style is minimal; With the least possible cuts I want to make a new and neat image. I like to create surreal and undefinable images to offer the viewer his own interpretation. I prefer to display an atmosphere or mood instead of a definite story; mostly tinted with a nostalgic feeling due to the old material I prefer to use.My collages do not necesearily contain a message or moral but are more about beauty and escapism. The pure aesthetics of compositon and colour combinations can be very satisfying to me.“
